The Greek philosopher, Plato, founded the first academy when he set up his school near the grove of Academus, about a mile outside the walls of Athens. He was a teacher of Aristotle, who shared his beliefs about the importance of music in education.
In his book, The Republic, Plato describes an ideal society in which music holds a central place. His theories, however, might not be totally acceptable to today's artists. He also advocates the censorship of musical themes and ideas which he considered unsuitable for his ideal, civilised society.
